The game is Petanque, a favorite game of Southern France, and the aim is to place the steel ball closest to a marker.
Here on the tourist dotted Miami Beach this serious player becomes her pitch, with mind and body in a flow of movements leading to the release of the ball and the recovery of equilibrium.
Though it may seem a casual gathering of friends, this is a serious tournament, many of the players have come long distances for the competition and the camaraderie.
